Youth Internship (YI)
Youth Internship projects will lead to real jobs that meet the career aspirations of young people as well as the needs of employers. Youth Internship has four streams:
Community Based
This stream is a collaborative effort between Oteenow Employment and Training Society, other community organizations, and employers. The objective is to provide entry-level skills and work experience for youth.
Youth Experience
The purpose of Youth Experience is to assist out-of-school youth in making a successful transition into the labor force by providing them with employment assistance and work experience.
International
The purpose of this stream is to provide youth with an internationally focused work experience, which will lead to long-term employment or self-employment.
Entrepreneurship
The goal of this stream is to enable youth to start their own business. The Government of Canada supports self-employment as a means for youth to enter the labor market.
Youth Service (YS)
Youth Service provides opportunities for community service work and personal development for youth. It allows them to explore career options and plan for the future. Youth Service can help participants gain new experiences while providing services to their community.
Working as a team, participants gain valuable work experience and develop a range of skills while providing valuable community services. Some examples of projects include:
- Repair and maintenance of community facilities
- Setting up directories of services for those with disabilities and ensuring that these people have access to the services
- Assisting low-income families and seniors in starting community gardens
- Recreational after-school programs to combat violence
The youth programs are designed to help youth explore career options and plan for the future. Youth gain new experiences while providing service to their community.
Summer Work Experience Program (SWEP)
The SWEP program assists students who are currently enrolled in full-time studies and plan on returning to school in the fall. The program is designed to offer meaningful, career-related work placements for students during the summer months. A wage subsidy is given to the employer as an incentive to employ students. The SWEP employer does not replace an existing employee.
Labour Market Information (LMI)
Labour market information is provided to clients through various program partnerships. It provides information related to employment, such as: new industry and business startups, community resource availability and skill development required for the future.
